Mergoum have been produced since ancient times. Mergoum are produced by tightly interweaving the warp and weft strands of the weave to produce a flat surface with no pile. They are heavier than a Kilim.
This Tunisian Mergoum is composed of parallel stripes of various colours. Traditionally manufactured by nomads from the South, it was once used to cover the litters of camels or serve as a separation in the tents. Berber motifs featured in this rug include:
